Research-Backed Input Estimates

Research by linguist Paul Nation and others suggests that reaching advanced levels requires extensive input. Estimates vary by language difficulty and learner background, but general guidelines include:

  • A1 to A2: 100-150 hours of comprehensible input
  • A2 to B1: 200-300 hours of comprehensible input
  • B1 to B2: 400-600 hours of comprehensible input
  • B2 to C1: 800-1200 hours of comprehensible input
  • C1 to C2: 1500+ hours of comprehensible input

The 95% Rule

For optimal vocabulary acquisition, content should be at a level where you understand 95-98% of words. At this level, you can infer unknown words from context while maintaining comprehension and engagement.
