Learn in your car
What is it?
The Learn in Your Car series comes in Spanish, French
, Mandarin Chinese
, Italian
, German
, Russian
, and Japanese
. Each level comes with CDs that teach you the language through audio. It is meant to be used without a visual so that you “learn in your car” as the them name suggest.
There are 9 CDs with 3 per level for each language. There are mini books that go with it that you can use if you would like. The program works through lessons. In each lesson, they say a phrase in English and follow it with the Spanish pronunciation twice with pauses in between.
Who is it best suited for?
This program is best suited for the beginner who has a little bit of experience already. It is only repeating sentences without grammar explanations, so it is best to use as a supplement to other language sources.
How will it help me?
This will help you most with your speaking and listening. It doesn’t have any explanations, so you will have to work with a grammar text as well. Through the repetitive phrases, you may pick up new vocabulary, but the best attribute is the listening.
What is its best feature?
As just mentioned, the best attribute of this program is the listening. While you could just listen to the radio or watch a movie in your target language, this is a step farther. You are able to hear the English first, so you will have to think. Again, it is not best used on its own, but as a supplement.
How should it be used?
It is great for its named purpose, to learn in your car. Also, you could load the CDs on your mp3 player and listen when you work out or have free time. You could listen to for 10 minutes once a day, or incorporate it some other way into your daily lifestyle.
It won’t give you the grammar, vocabulary, and practice to become fluent all by itself, but it is a great addition to any language learning program.
How much does it cost?
Out of most of the CD and software programs out there, this is very reasonably priced, especially for the amount it gives you. You could buy each level separately for about $14 or buy all three levels in a complete set for about $33.
Is it worthwhile?
The Learn in Your Car series is worth the price. It is cheap unlike other programs like Pimsleur, but it’s only worth how much it cost. Pimsleur
is expensive, but it offers a little more. Still, it’s a great supplementary program if you are having trouble with listening comprehension or want more practice.
Conclusion
As I have mentioned, it’s no Pimsleur, but it does the job. It will give you practice and it will definitely help teach you a language, but it works best along with a well rounded program.
